Task 1 - Exercises

LECTURES

The most common typefaces of an era are determined by the writing instruments available at the time. For example, the earliest records of written language were created by scratching letters on soft clay, which resulted in very jagged and straight letters.

However, with the invention of tools like brushes and pens, fonts evolved to allow for more curved letters, and even serifs appeared. The tools of an era aren't the only factor influencing the evolution of fonts. Social needs also affect its evolution. For example, lowercase Roman letters were eventually created because they were written faster than uppercase letters.

Not only that, but the medium in which the writing is created also affects. Previously, all writing had to be written by hand, but with the invention of the printing press, more letters that were impractical to write by hand could be widely used and distributed.

All in all, the evolution of typefaces is a great reflection of technology, the commercial and social needs of an era, and aesthetic trends.

Instructions

Task 1.1 - Type Expression

The first is "pop" because like the popping sound of a balloon, I can change the "o" to the shape of a balloon

The same "pop", which can also be associated with shock, so you can also use an exclamation mark to represent the letter ''o''
Next is "grow", the first thing that comes to mind is the growth of plants, so the letter r can be changed to the shape of a plant seedling
I think "grow" can also mean the process of growing up, so I use lowercase to uppercase, from thin to thick to mean "grow"
For "wink", my first thought was to change the letter K to the shape of an eye, and to change the dot on the letter i to a ❤

Finally, "cough", I initially wanted to use handwriting with a special brush to express "hoarseness", then use the letter c for the mouth, and use multiple "ough" for coughing

Task 1.2 - Animation

This task requires to use PS to make a GIF, I chose this one

Similarly, the letter c is used to represent the mouth, and the three oughs that appear accordingly are used to represent the action of coughing.

Task 2.1

We need to watch Mr. Vinod's video tutorial on how to create layouts for different text formatting areas by applying kerning, line spacing, paragraph spacing, alignment, and more. In this exercise, we will use Adobe InDesign for text formatting. For the first assignment, I wrote my name in 10 different fonts, and I did some kerning and tracking to balance the letters.
